Although I’ve worked in the plastics and chemical industry for over 30 years, I much prefer working in wood on my own time. I’ve been lucky enough to travel and live around the world and had the opportunity to see firsthand the art and architecture of masters in all media.
My own tastes run to arts and crafts, especially Greene and Greene. I love the exposed joinery and celebration of the woodworker’s techniques. I don’t happen to be a fan of quarter sawn white oak, or the ammonia fumed finish so well used by Stickley, so the mahogany, and other “exotics” used by the Greene brothers as well as their merger of the arts and crafts with Japanese themes drives my fascination with their design vocabulary.
I also like the lines and feel of Shaker, Federalist and Krenov. As you’ll see, I’ve done some Shaker pieces and Krenov-esque boxes. As my veneering skills improve, I hope to tackle a few Federal inspired designs in the future as well as a full size Krenov inspired cabinet.
