Koa Box

Koa Box

On vacation on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, I stopped by a couple of cabinet maker’s shops. These guys did fantastic work with wood you don’t often see. One sold me a suitcase full of Koa cut offs. Koa was originally used by the native Hawaiians for their outrigger canoes. It works quite well and is a beautiful wood. Because of over harvesting and habitat loss, it is now comes come completely from dead trees on private land. Hopefully efforts to reestablish are successful. I turned some of my stash into this jeweler box for myself.
